Puck Line Betting
Puckline betting is a different variation of spread betting, precisely for the National Hockey League (the NHL). In this version of betting, the favorite’s score gets about 1.5 points subtracted while the underdog gets 1.5 points added. The reason for this is to balance the skill-advantage between the favourite and the underdog. It’s also a way of encouraging bets on the underdog, making it easier for sports betting sites to make a profit. If all this is a bit confusing, don’t worry, read on below and learn more about puck line betting in the United States.

Puck Line Betting
Puck line bets in America have a fixed 1.5 that is subtracted or added to the overall score of the game. Different from other sports where a spread bet is used, as mentioned before, the score that is added to the final score is supposed to even out the odds. For instance, if team X plays against team Y and the puck lines and money lines read as follows:
- Team X: +1.5 – 120
- Team Y: -1.5 +100
The -120 and +100 are known as the money line odds. To understand more about moneyline betting, please feel free to go through our guide on moneyline betting in the USA.
How Puck Line Betting Works
As mentioned, the puck line spread is 1.5. To explain how the process works in a much easier way, let’s explore the various outcomes, continuing with the team X and Y example. So now, let’s say the overall score of the match is team Y 3 vs. team X 7:
- You have to subtract 1.5 from team X, leaving the score as 5.5
- Add 1.5 to team Y, making it 4.5
If you had wagered on the puck line for team Y, the overall score even after subtracting the 1.5 remains more than the overall score for team Y. However, if it was the other way round, you will realize that even though team X would have won the game, the puck line wager on the team loses. Here’s how:
- Deduct 1.5 from team X, resulting in the score being 2.5
- Add 1.5 to team Y, which then becomes 4.5
In this case, the puck line bet on San Diego will lose because the final score for the team is 2.5, less than team Y’s overall score of 3.

For new players that might be wondering, how do we bet on the puck line – well, here’s how:
- Visit any of the top sports betting sites featured on our website and place your bet on with the underdog or the favourite.
- Add 1.5 to the underdog’s score
- Deduct 1.5 from the favorite’s sore.
- Compare the results. If the results of the favourite, after adding the 1.5 is less than the underdog’s score for the game then you lose.
- If the result of the underdog after adding the 1.5 is more than the favorite’s score for the match, you win.
